    Authoritarian Rule

    • There are five main types of authoritarian rule: military dictatorship, monarchy, personalistic dictatorship, single party dictatorship, and hybrid dictatorship
    • In a military dictatorship the military takes control of a country and installs a dictator, usually the highest ranking military officer. The military maintains power through force of arms.
    • In a monarchy the power is obtained and passed on through family connections. These are often considered autocracies and dictatorships.
    • In a personalistic dictatorship the leader may be supported by a party or military but controls the majority of power, especially when choosing government roles. These leaders rely heavily on their own charm to maintain control and often place loyalists in positions of power.
    • A single party dictatorship is also called a dominant party dictatorship or a one-party state. While multiple political parties may exist, one clearly dominates the government and has total control over elections.
    • Hybrid dictatorships blend elements of the other four types and are often formed through a combination of a military dictatorship alongside a personalistic dictatorship.
    • As of 2024, the following countries are ruled by military dictatorships: Mali, Myanmar, Chad, Guinea, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Gabon.
    • In 2013, Nicolás Maduro won the Venezuelan Presidential election after the death of Hugo Chavez. Maduro continued Chávez's policies and implemented authoritarian rule, leading to opposition attempts to remove him from office.
    • Uzbekistan, since 2016, has implemented reforms under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, leading to some improvements, but ultimately remains an authoritarian state.
    • The countries which have a monarchy form of government are:
      • Andorra
      • Bahrain
      • Belgium
      • Brunei
      • Cambodia
      • Canada
      • Denmark
      • Eswatini
      • Japan
      • Jordan
      • Kuwait
      • Liechtenstein
      • Luxembourg
      • Malaysia
      • Monaco
      • Morocco
      • Netherlands
      • Norway
      • Oman
      • Qatar
      • Saint Kitts and Nevis
      • Saint Lucia
      • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
      • Saudi Arabia
      • Spain
      • Sweden
      • Thailand
      • Tonga
      • Tuvalu
      • United Arab Emirates
      • United Kingdom
      • Vatican City
    •  A dominant party dictatorship is a government in which one political party dominates the political system and does not allow meaningful opposition or competition.
    •  Russia is considered a dominant party dictatorship with power concentrated in the hands of President Vladimir Putin. Putin has established a system of loyalist security forces and a subservient parliament, and has maintained his power through a combination of political control and repression.
    •  The dominant party in China is the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
    •  It currently holds a monopoly on political power in the country and controls all levels of government.
    •  The CCP suppresses dissent and controls the flow of information within the country.
    •  The CCP's authority is maintained through the use of surveillance, propaganda, and the suppression of opposition.
    •  Other countries with dominant party dictatorships include Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, and North Korea.

    Dictatorship Types

    • Military Dictatorship: Power derived from military strength, usually established through a coup, with a high-ranking military officer in leadership
    • Monarchies: Power inherited through family lines, combining autocracy, monarchy, and dictatorship
    • Personalistic Dictatorships: Leaders supported by a party or military, but exercise immense personal control, placing loyalists in government positions, and cultivating a cult of personality
    • Single-Party Dictatorships: One dominant party controls all aspects of government, elections, and propaganda
    • Hybrid Dictatorships: Combine elements of different dictatorship types, like Pakistan from 1977 to 1988

    Military Rule

    • Countries under current military rule: Mali, Myanmar, Chad, Guinea, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Niger, Gabon

    Notable Authoritarian Leaders

    • Nicolás Maduro (Venezuela): Elected to replace Hugo Chávez in 2013 and re-elected in 2018, with a style of increasingly authoritarian rule
    • Shavkat Mirziyoyev (Uzbekistan): Despite reforms since 2016, Uzbekistan remains authoritarian, with limited signs of democratization

    Other Systems

    • Russia: Vladimir Putin holds significant power, with a loyalist security force and a compliant system
    • Monarchies: Several countries still operate under this system, with various degrees of power held by the monarch, including constitutional and absolute monarchies
    • Dominant-Party Systems: One party has absolute control over the government and its workings, with no real opposition.
