Study Notes
Organic Compounds
- The simplest organic compounds are composed of hydrocarbons, which are made up of only hydrogen and carbon atoms.
Separation of Hydrocarbons
- Hydrocarbons can be separated through fractional distillation, which takes advantage of differences in boiling points.
Aliphatic Hydrocarbons
- There are three types of aliphatic hydrocarbons: alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes, which differ in the types of bonds between carbon atoms.
Cycloalkanes, Cycloalkenes, and Cycloalkynes
- Cycloalkanes are saturated cyclic hydrocarbons, cycloalkenes are unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbons with one or more carbon-carbon double bonds, and cycloalkynes are unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbons with one or more carbon-carbon triple bonds.
Benzene
- Benzene, a unique hydrocarbon, has a planar, ring-shaped structure, which gives it physical and chemical properties that are markedly different from alkanes.
- The planar, ring-shaped structure of benzene is due to the delocalization of electrons in the ring.
Origin of the Term 'Aromatic'
- The term 'aromatic' was originally used to describe this class of compounds because many of them have a sweet, pleasant odor.
