Types of Abuse

  • Economic Abuse: making a woman financially dependent
  • Sexual Violence: acts of a sexual nature, including rape, sexual harassment, and making demeaning remarks

Intimate Partner Violence

  • A pattern of assaultive and coercive behavior that may include physical injury, psychological abuse, sexual assault, stalking, deprivation, intimidation, and reproductive coercion

Child Abuse

  • Any recent act or failure to act that results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation
  • Types of Child Abuse:
    • Physical
    • Sexual
    • Emotional
    • Neglect

Elderly Mistreatment

  • Includes neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, psychological abuse, exploitation, abandonment, or prejudicial attitudes that decrease quality of life and are demeaning to those over 65 years old

Family Violence

  • A situation in which one family member causes physical or emotional harm to another family member
  • A pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner
  • Psychopathology Theory: batterers suffer from personality disorders
  • Social Learning Theory: violence is a learned behavior from childhood

Types of Family Violence

  • Physical: involves the use of force, often causing injury or pain
  • Sexual: involves forcing sex or sexual acts upon another person without their consent
  • Psychological: involves using words, actions, insults, intimidation, or manipulation to control, exploit, frighten, or humiliate another person
  • Financial: involves using economic resources to exploit or manipulate another person

Consequences of Abuse

  • Inability of the frail elderly to handle the trauma
  • Inability to get food or medication because of neglect
  • Inability to pay for food or medication because of financial abuse
  • Inability to deal with illness/malnutrition/problems because of depression associated with abuse
