Study Notes
Hazardous Materials Response
Approach and Response
- Plan approach from upwind, uphill, and upstream position
- Obtain information from FAO, including:
- Wind speed and direction
- Name of hazardous material involved
- Physical state of the material
Arrival at Scene
- Establish command post and staging areas in upwind, uphill, and upstream position
- Recognize and identify the product/problem
- Obtain information from involved parties, including:
- Drivers
- Plant officials
- Eyewitnesses
- Locate shipping papers, placards, labels, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), or ERG for product identification
- Utilize ERG to look up information on product, including:
- UN-ID#
- Name of product
- Mitigation techniques
- Control zones
- Firefighter safety equipment
- First aid
- If chemical cannot be identified, treat as highly toxic, violently reactive, or explosive
Set-Up and Secure Control Zones
- Isolate area by setting up safe zone
- Deny entry to non-emergency responders
- Use barrier tape, rope, or natural barriers to keep civilians and firefighters out of contaminated area
- Evaluate hazards of incident based on gathered information
- Determine possible exposures due to travel of product
- If possible, block extension of product and warn or evacuate those in path of product
Initiate Defensive Operations
- If safe to do so, use defensive control measures to contain product and eliminate ignition sources
- Defensive options include:
- Damming
- Diking
