Trichomonas vaginalis
- Distribution: Found worldwide, with a high prevalence in Libya, and approximately 156 million new cases among people aged 15-49 years old in 2020.
Habitat and Mode of Infection
- Habitat: Urogenital tract
- Mode of Infection: Mainly through sexual intercourse, and also through non-sexual transmission via fomites like towels and toilet seats, as well as from swimming pools.
Characteristics
- Type of protozoan: Urogenital flagellate
- Disease caused: Trichomoniasis
- Infective stage: Trophozoite
- Form: Only exists as a trophozoite, without a cyst stage
- Location in the body: Urogenital tract of males (urethra and prostate) and females (vagina)
Diagnosis and Symptoms
- Diagnostic stage: Trophozoite in vaginal swab or prostate secretion
- Symptoms in women: Most infections are asymptomatic, but may include yellow, purulent vaginal discharge, red and sore vagina, and pain during intercourse and urination
- Symptoms in men: Often asymptomatic, but may experience penile irritation and urethritis
- Diagnosis method: Microscopic examination of vaginal discharge or urine
