Study Notes
Treatment Options for Partially Edentulous Patients
- Removable Partial Denture (RPD): A removable denture replaces missing teeth in a partially edentulous arch, and can be easily inserted and removed by the patient.
- Fixed Partial Denture: A fixed partial denture (bridge) replaces missing teeth with crowns cemented to adjacent teeth (abutments).
- Dental Implants: Implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth.
- RPD Advantages: Restore function, particularly for phonetics and mastication.
- RPD Function: Improves speech articulation, proper occlusion and food mastication.
- RPD Phonetic Impact: May affect labiodental sounds (f, v, s)
- RPD Considerations: Suitable when the prognosis of remaining teeth is uncertain or if they have reduced periodontal support.
- Angle of Gingival (Cervical) Convergence: This angle is found apical to the height of contour on the abutment tooth and is formed by the tooth surface gingival to the survey line and the analyzing rod or undercut gauge of a surveyor.
