The purpose of the test preparation guide is to provide information about Metro-North rulebook definitions and signal aspects and indications that Locomotive Engineer Trainees must learn.

It is the responsibility of Locomotive Engineer Trainees to study and learn the material contained in the test preparation guide in preparation for the upcoming exam.

An interlocking is an arrangement of signals and appliances so interconnected that their movements must succeed each other in proper sequence, and for which interlocking rules are in effect.

A Bulletin Order contains temporary items affecting the movement of trains.

A DTOBO contains Working Limits Stop Sign locations and other safety critical instructions, while a GN contains instructions that do not affect the movement or operation of trains.

A GO contains permanent changes in Operating Rules, the Special Instructions, or other Operating Manuals.

A Controlled Track is a track under the control of an RTC.

Train control apparatus is the equipment on an engine or cab car that receives and displays cab signals and controls the speed of the train in accordance with that signal.

The Absolute Block Signal indicates that the train should proceed at slow speed within interlocking limits and not exceed 59 MPH outside of interlocking limits. The train should approach the next interlocking signal prepared to stop.

The Terminal Restricting signal indicates that the train should proceed at restricted speed.

The End of Block Sign indicates the end of manual block system rules and entering non-controlled track.
