Airborne Precautions

Which of the following statements regarding Contact Precautions is incorrect?

Contact Precautions are necessary for all patients in a healthcare setting

Which of the following actions is most appropriate when caring for a patient on Droplet Precautions?

Wear a surgical mask and eye protection

Which of the following statements regarding Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Contact Precautions is correct?

A clean, non-sterile gown and gloves should be donned before entering the patient-care area.

What is the primary reason for implementing Contact Precautions?

To prevent the spread of infections through touch or contact with the patient or their environment.

Which of the following conditions or organisms would require the implementation of Contact Precautions?

Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDR)

When should hand hygiene be performed in relation to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Contact Precautions?

Immediately after removing PPE and before exiting the patient room.

What is the recommended practice for using patient-care equipment when implementing Contact Precautions?

Use disposable or dedicated patient-care equipment and clean and disinfect it before use on other patients.

If a healthcare worker is caring for multiple patients in a multi-bed patient room or ward, which of the following practices should be followed regarding Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Contact Precautions?

PPE should be removed, hand hygiene performed, and new PPE donned before coming into contact with another patient.

Study Notes

Contact Precautions

  • Patients are placed on Contact Precautions when they have suspected or known infections that are spread by touch or contact with the patient or the patient’s environment, surfaces, and equipment.
  • Examples of organisms or conditions that require Contact Precautions include multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms, abscesses with major draining, and incontinence or severe diarrhea.
  • When cleaning patient care equipment and the environment of a patient who has been on Contact Precautions, use gloves and gowns, and remove and discard them immediately after cleaning is complete.
  • Use disposable or dedicated patient-care equipment (e.g. stethoscopes, gait belts, walkers) and clean and disinfect equipment before use on other patients.

Droplet Precautions

  • Patients are placed on Droplet precautions when they have known or suspected infections transmitted by respiratory droplets.
  • Droplets can spread via hands when people sneeze or cough into their hands and then touch mucous membranes of another person.
  • Put on a mask (NOT a respirator) before entering the patient-care area.
  • Examples of pathogens that require Droplet Precautions include Seasonal Influenza.

Airborne Precautions

  • Required when transmission occurs via aerosolized particles that travel long distances.
  • Examples of pathogens that require Airborne Precautions include Tuberculosis.
  • Requires adequately ventilated space and a particulate mask (such as N95) and possibly other PPE, follow signage.

Transmission-Based Precautions

  • Added measures to prevent the spread of disease from patients with known or suspected disease.
  • Transmission-Based Precautions play a crucial role in preventing the spread of disease from patients with known or suspected disease.

Patient Equipment and PPE

  • Use separate equipment for patients on contact precautions.
  • Do not use the same walker with both patients because a walker cannot be cleaned, and they may be infected with different organisms.
  • Put on clean PPE when assisting patients, and remove and discard PPE immediately after use.
