Traction Converter Cubicle (TCC)
Traction Converter Cubicle (TCC)
A completely assembled unit that houses the traction control unit (TCU) and other traction equipment. It's installed in the high voltage compartment of the motor coach.
What is the dual voltage system of the Traction Converter?
What is the dual voltage system of the Traction Converter?
The traction converter can operate on either 1500V DC or 950V, 1ph, 50Hz AC. This allows for flexibility in different power supply environments.
What does 'Four Quadrant Chopper' mean?
What does 'Four Quadrant Chopper' mean?
It's a power electronic device that can control the direction and magnitude of electrical power flow in all four quadrants of the voltage-current plane. It converts AC to DC for the DC link.

Study Notes
Traction Converter Cubicle
- The traction converter cubicle is a complete unit in the motor coach's high-tension compartment
- The traction control unit (TCU) is inside the cabinet
- Nominal input voltage is 2 x 950 V AC, 50 Hz / 1500V DC
- AC input voltage range: 627 V - 1083 V
- AC input voltage is related to a line voltage of 16.5-28.5 kV
- AC input frequency range: 46 Hz - 54 Hz
- DC input voltage range: 800 – 1800 V
- Nominal DC link circuit voltage: AC Mode 1800 V, DC Mode 1500 V
- Power factor in AC at different loads and line voltages is approximately unity.
Electrical System
- The traction converter uses a dual voltage system (1500V DC or 950V, 1-phase, 50Hz AC (25kV AC line))
- It has two four-quadrant choppers and two PWM inverters each supplying two traction motors
- The converter has a DC link and various components including DC link capacitors, contactors, transducers, and blowers
- The Siemens Traction control unit (TCU) SIBAS® 32S controls and monitors the converter.
