Study Notes
Traction Converter Cubicle
- The traction converter cubicle is a complete unit housed in the motor coach's high-tension compartment
- The traction control unit (TCU) is within the cabinet
- Nominal input voltage: 2 x 950 V AC, 50 Hz / 1500 V DC
- Input voltage range (AC mode): 627 V – 1083 V AC (related to 16.5-28.5 kV line voltage)
- Input frequency range (AC mode): 46 Hz – 54 Hz
- Input voltage range (DC mode): 800 V – 1800 V DC
- Nominal DC link circuit voltage: AC Mode 1800 V, DC Mode 1500 V
- Power factor in AC at various loads and line voltages: approximately unity
Electrical System
- The traction converter operates on a dual voltage system (1500 V DC or 950V, 1ph, 50Hz AC)
- Two four-quadrant choppers, one DC link, and two PWM inverters supply current to the traction motors
- The converter includes DC link capacitors, contactors, transducers, blowers, etc.
- The Siemens Traction control unit (TCU) SIBAS® 32S regulates and monitors the traction converter.
