Licensing Requirements for Toronto Fire Services Personnel
- All TFS personnel must possess and maintain a valid Ontario Driver's Licence relative to the legal requirements of the vehicle they are assigned to drive.
- Company Officers are responsible for ensuring that crew members assigned to drive TFS apparatus possess a sufficient licence.
Driver's Licence Requirements
- Personnel driving TFS apparatus or other TFS vehicles must possess a valid licence for the proper "Class" of the vehicle to be driven.
- Drivers operating a vehicle equipped with Air Brakes must have a licence with an Air Brakes "Z" Endorsement.
- Drivers must be in compliance with "Conditions" specified on their respective licence while operating any TFS vehicle.
- Certain personnel must maintain a driver's licence of a minimum Class "D" qualification with an Air Brakes "Z" Endorsement, including:
- Operations Fire Fighters (including Acting Captains)
- HUSAR team members
- Mechanical staff (excluding Marine Engineers)
- Training and Technical Operations staff
Carrying Licence While Driving
- Personnel driving TFS apparatus or other vehicles must carry their licence at all times while in charge of a motor vehicle.
- A photocopy of a licence is deemed to be acceptable.
Licence Verification
- Drivers must indicate with their initials in the applicable area of the Vehicle Inspection report that they are in possession of a valid Driver's Licence applicable for the vehicle they are assigned to drive.
- Operations Division Company Officers are responsible for inspecting the Vehicle Inspection report to ensure their driver is in possession of a valid Driver's Licence applicable for the vehicle they are assigned to drive.
- Support Division Company Officers and Supervisors are responsible for verifying on a quarterly basis that each employee under their supervision is in possession of a valid licence.
Licence Suspension
- No employee shall drive or move a TFS vehicle if not in possession of a valid licence of the proper class and endorsement.
- In the event an individual's licence becomes invalid, it is the employee's responsibility to notify the Company Officer or other immediate Supervisor.
- Failure to comply with this policy may result in disciplinary action.
