Securing Fire Stations

  • Fire station doors must be locked when unoccupied.
  • Apparatus bay doors must be closed when the fire station is unoccupied.
  • The Company Officer of the last apparatus leaving a fire station is responsible for ensuring all fire station doors are locked before departure or timed to self-close.

Emergency Procedures

  • Inability to secure the building (e.g., broken window, door, or lock system) requires an Emergency Services (Level 1) request.
  • Call 338-FRED (3733) and select from the menu to speak to a representative for 24/7 emergency service.

Active Security Issue

  • If there is an immediate threat to station personnel or the public, the Company Officer will have all personnel withdraw to a safe location and announce a Code 1 on a portable or station radio.
  • If no radios are available, the Company Officer will contact TFS Communications via phone from a safe location.
  • If there is no immediate threat, the Company Officer will contact Corporate Security at 416-397-0000 and request assistance.

Lighting

  • The Duty Officer verifies that all exterior lights illuminating fire station property are maintained.
  • Minor lighting issues that are not disruptive to staff or the public require an Urgent Service (Level 2) request.
  • Exterior lights not equipped with timers should be turned on at dusk or one hour before sunset.

Theft or Vandalism

  • Suspected theft from or malicious damage to TFS fire stations is reported through:
    • Firefighter to Company Officer
    • Company Officer to District Chief
    • District Chief to Platoon Chief
  • The Platoon Chief conducts or assigns an investigation into theft or malicious damage.
  • The Platoon Chief notifies Toronto Police Services when equipment is lost under suspected criminal circumstances.

Investigation and Reporting of Incidents and Threats

  • Corporate Security investigates reported security incidents involving employees, visitors, or contractors.
  • City staff must comply with all aspects of the investigation.
  • Depending on the type and severity of the incident, the investigation may involve other divisions or units.
