Study Notes
Firefighter Accountability System (FFAS)
- The FFAS is a tool used by Toronto Fire Services personnel to promote and enhance safety.
- It provides a means of accounting for the location and task assignment of personnel.
Components of the FFAS
- The FFAS begins from the moment the Firefighter reports for duty, to the emergency incident and the eventual end of their shift.
Magnetic Accountability Tag (Mag Tag)
- Three Mag Tags are issued to each Firefighter, inscribed with the individual's name and employee number, and color-coded according to rank.
- Only one Mag Tag is active within the FFAS at any given time:
- Yellow: Firefighter
- Red: Captain
- White: District Chief and above
- The active Mag Tag is to be affixed to the Apparatus Passport to which the individual has been assigned for that shift or to the Station Board when off shift.
Photo Identification Tag (PIT)
- Two PITs with an attached clip are issued to each Firefighter.
- The PIT displays a photograph of the individual Firefighter, job title, name, employee number, and is color-coded according to seniority:
- Red: Probationary Firefighter or spare tag
- Yellow: Third or Second Class Firefighter
- White: First Class Firefighter and above
- TFS accredited media personnel will be issued with an Orange PIT, which contains a photograph.
- Only one PIT is active within the FFAS at any given time, and the other is a spare.
Passports
- Passports are magnetic backed metal plates designed to accommodate the Mag Tags of on-duty personnel assigned to individual apparatus.
- Each apparatus, including the Chiefs' cars, will carry a Passport.
- The Passport will be located on the Captain's door in a holder.
Station Boards
- Station boards are mounted in each fire station, usually in the apparatus bay area.
- The metallic boards are white in color and divided into four quadrants – one quadrant for each Platoon.
- The Mag Tags of all off-duty fire station personnel shall be attached to the board.
Entry Control Kit
- The Entry Control Kit consists of:
- An Entry Control Board with clock attached
- An all-surface pencil and sharpener
- An Entry Control vest
- An Entry Control Kit is carried on each TFS Pumper, Rescue, Aerial, and all DC/Command vehicles.
- The Entry Control Board is used for all Sectors, including RIT.
- The Entry Control Board is designed to display information such as:
- Identity
- Entry time
- Radio identifier
- Assignment/location
- Cylinder duration
- Time of egress
- Information is recorded with an all-surface pencil in the appropriate area and by attaching the PITs of personnel that have passed through the Entry Control point.
