Duty Officer Guidelines
- All Toronto Fire Services (TFS) personnel are responsible for completing duties assigned by the Duty Officer.
- The Duty Officer role provides a single point of contact and ensures continuity with outside agencies, within the station, and between platoons.
Duty Officer Role
- Each TFS fire station has a Duty Officer on each platoon.
- The Duty Officer can be an acting or substitute Company Officer, but not a Firefighter.
- The Company Officer assigned the Duty Officer role assumes all responsibilities of the position.
- The Duty Officer MUST be identified on each daily staffing report (Quatro) in the comment section.
Selection and Rotation
- In single apparatus fire stations, the Company Officer is the Duty Officer at all times.
- In multiple apparatus fire stations, the Duty Officer role is rotated between Company Officers.
- Rotation of Duty Officer assignment occurs on the Monday shift.
- In the extended absence of the Duty Officer, other Company Officers assume the responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- The Duty Officer is responsible for:
- Being the point of contact for general inquiries and questions.
- Conducting fire station tours and hosting visitors.
- Overseeing fire station training.
- Ensuring daily safety briefings take place.
- Flying flags in accordance with F-FLAG – Flag Flying.
- Inspecting spare or unassigned equipment.
- Managing paperwork and administrative functions related to the fire station.
- Ordering supplies and materials.
- Overseeing fire station repairs and maintenance.
- Conducting workplace inspections (Health and Safety, Fire Prevention).
- Managing power failure situations.
- Ensuring fire station safety.
- Managing fire station parking.
- Maintaining the public address (PA) system.
- Assigning fire station responsibilities, including cleaning, disinfection, and garbage removal.
- Conducting floor watch duties.
