Tests using the verb "to be" in English

Definition: The verb "to be" is an auxiliary verb that links a subject to a complement. It does not show action but describes a state of being.
Forms: The verb "to be" has different forms depending on the tense and the subject.
- Present tense:

Uses:
Describing states: Describing a person's condition, profession, or status.

Location: Indicating where someone or something is.

Describing characteristics: Describing a person's qualities.
Example: He is tall. She is smart. It is beautiful.
Describing a situation which is in progress: Indicating an activity or state currently happening.
Example: The children are playing. The sun is shining.
Copula Verb: A major function in connecting subjects with their predicates (e.g. adjective being used to describe the noun).
Example: The house is red. The child is tall.

Example Sentences Demonstrating Varying Uses

Simple Present:
I am a teacher.
They are students.
He is tired.
The dog is playful.
Simple Past:
I was happy last week.
She was at the park yesterday.
They were playing in the garden.
Present Continuous:
We are studying English now.
He is writing a letter.

Past Continuous:
