Understanding Time Zones

• The Earth is divided into 24 time zones, each representing a one-hour difference from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
• Time zones are identified by their offset from UTC, ranging from UTC-12 (which is 12 hours behind UTC) to UTC+12 (which is 12 hours ahead of UTC)

Converting Between Time Zones

• To convert a time from one time zone to another, you need to know the offset of both time zones from UTC
• If the time zones have the same offset, no conversion is needed
• To convert a time from a time zone with a lower offset to one with a higher offset, add the difference in hours
• To convert a time from a time zone with a higher offset to one with a lower offset, subtract the difference in hours

Examples of Time Zone Conversions

• Convert 10:00 AM EST (UTC-5) to PST (UTC-8)
  • EST is 3 hours ahead of PST, so subtract 3 hours: 10:00 AM EST = 7:00 AM PST
• Convert 3:00 PM CET (UTC+1) to EDT (UTC-4)
  • CET is 5 hours ahead of EDT, so subtract 5 hours: 3:00 PM CET = 10:00 AM EDT

• The Cartesian plane can be used to visualize time zones and their offsets from UTC
• The x-axis can represent the time of day (0-24 hours), and the y-axis can represent the offset from UTC (-12 to +12 hours)
• Each point on the graph represents a specific time and time zone
