Indications and Dosing
- Indicated for acute coronary syndrome or history of myocardial infarction
- Initial dose: 180 mg orally (po) loading dose
- Maintenance dosing: 90 mg po twice daily (bid) along with aspirin (max 100 mg) for 12 months
- After 12 months, the dose is reduced to 60 mg po bid
Mechanism of Action
- Acts as a reversible and noncompetitive binder to the adenosine diphosphate (ADP) P2Y12 receptor on platelets
- Prevents ADP-mediated activation of the GPIIb/IIIa receptor complex, leading to reduced platelet aggregation
