### Thyroid Gland
- Located at the base of the neck below the Adam's apple
- Produces T3 and T4 hormones, crucial for metabolism
- Thyroid dysfunction leads to energy fluctuations, sleep disruptions, temperature intolerance, and weight management difficulties
Iodine and Goiter
- Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production
- Iodine deficiency can lead to a goiter, an enlarged thyroid gland
- Goiters were common in the American Midwest due to iodine-deficient soil
- Iodized salt has reduced goiter prevalence in the US, but remains a problem in some parts of the world
Hypothyroidism
- Condition where the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones
- Symptoms include: decreased energy, increased sleep need, cold intolerance, slow pulse, constipation, weight gain, and depression
- Causes include: disease, radiation therapy, medications, or thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy)
- After a thyroidectomy, synthetic thyroid hormone medication may be required
Hyperthyroidism
- Condition where the thyroid gland produces excessive hormones
- Also known as an overactive thyroid
- Symptoms include: heightened energy, decreased sleep need, heat intolerance, rapid pulse, frequent bowel movements, weight loss, nervousness, agitated behavior, and difficulty relaxing
Graves' Disease
- An autoimmune disorder causing hyperthyroidism
- Symptoms include: typical hyperthyroidism symptoms, and exophthalmos (bulging eyeballs)
- In autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks body tissues mistakenly.
