Thinking Skills

• Thinking skills are essential for making decisions, constructing plans, and solving problems.
• There are different types of cognition, including:
  • Information processing
  • Enquiry
  • Creative thinking
  • Reasoning
  • Critical thinking

Principles of Thinking Skills

• New ideas are composed of old elements, rearranged in a new way.
• Not all new ideas are on par; creativity is divided into cognitive and artistic creativity.
• Creativity is enhanced by the ability to detect connections between ideas.

Bloom's Taxonomy

• Levels of thinking:
  • Low: Knowing, Comprehension, Application/Problem Solving
  • High: Evaluation/Critical Thinking, Creativity
• Blooms' Taxonomy provides a way to organize thinking skills into six levels, from basic to highest order level of thinking.

Applying Bloom's Taxonomy

• Examples of outcomes for each level:
  • Remember: Recall basic ingredients needed to make a classic spaghetti Bolognese.
  • Understand: Explain the importance of each ingredient in contributing to the flavor and texture of the dish.
  • Apply: Demonstrate the process of preparing spaghetti Bolognese.
  • Analyze: Analyze the impact of variations in ingredient quantities on the taste and overall quality of the dish.
  • Evaluate: Evaluate different cooking methods and determine which one results in the most flavorful spaghetti Bolognese.
  • Create: Develop a unique recipe by incorporating unconventional ingredients while maintaining the essential elements of a traditional spaghetti Bolognese.

Creativity

• Creativity is the ability to look at the same thing as everyone else and think something different.
• Creativity can be developed by:
  • Looking at the world in terms of analogies (comparing two things to show similarities).
  • Learning about different ways to solve a problem.

Intelligence vs Creativity

• Intelligence in a domain means the ability to function at a high level in that domain.
• Creativity involves asking new questions and altering the domain.

• Mind mapping
• Six imaginary thinking hats
• Six action shoes
• SWOT analysis
