Thermodynamics in Physics
Thermodynamics is the branch of physics that deals with heat and temperature, their sources, conversion, and effects on physical systems. Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics
This law states that when two systems are in thermal equilibrium with a third system, they are in thermal equilibrium with each other. It establishes the concept of temperature and allows measurement of its absolute scale through the Kelvin (K) scale.
First Law of Thermodynamics
Also known as the law of conservation of energy, this law states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed. Heat engines convert heat energy into mechanical work, while refrigerators do the opposite. No heat engine can transform every unit of heat energy it receives into mechanical work, and no refrigerator can transform every unit of heat energy it rejects into mechanical work.
Second Law of Thermodynamics
This law introduces the concept of entropy, which measures the disorder or randomness of a system. It tells us the direction in which natural processes proceed; irreversible processes increase entropy, while reversible processes maintain it. For example, a hot cup of coffee cooling to room temperature increases the entropy of the universe.
Third Law of Thermodynamics
Although there is no absolute lower limit to the temperature that can theoretically be reached, the third law of thermodynamics sets an upper limit for entropy. It says that the entropy of a perfect crystal at absolute zero is exactly equal to zero.
