Study Notes

The Urinary System

  • Consists of kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra
  • Urethra has distinct functions depending on the sex (gender) of the individual

Functions

  • Eliminate waste products from the body
  • Maintain homeostasis, or a constant internal environment
  • Maintain constant concentrations of salt, water, and acids

Blood Flow in the Kidneys

  • Blood enters the kidneys through the renal arteries
  • Blood leaves the kidneys through the renal veins

Filtration in the Kidneys

  • Blood is filtered in the glomerulus
  • Glomerulus is part of the functional unit of the kidney called the nephron
  • Nephrons are contained within the renal cortex and renal medulla

Urine Storage and Elimination

  • Urine is stored in the bladder until there is enough pressure to cause it to enter the urethra
  • Urethra carries urine from the bladder to the outside
