Study Notes
The Cranium and Its Bones
- The cranium consists of 8 bones:
- Sphenoid (1)
- Temporal (2)
- Ethmoid (1)
- Parietal (2)
- Occipital (1)
- Frontal (1)
Frontal Bone
- Flat bone at the front of the cranium, forming the forehead.
- Contains squamous, orbital, and nasal parts.
- Articulates with various bones: parietal, ethmoid, lacrimal, maxillae, nasal, zygomatic, and sphenoid.
- Blood supply from the middle meningeal artery.
- Functions:
- Provides structural support to the skull and facial features.
- Protects the frontal lobe of the brain.
- Serves as an attachment point for muscles involved in facial expressions.
Parietal Bones
- Flat, square-shaped bones.
- Comprise frontal, occipital, sphenoidal, and mastoid angles.
- Articulate with frontal, occipital, temporal, and sphenoid bones.
- Blood supply from the middle meningeal artery.
- Functions:
- Provide structural integrity to the skull.
- Protect the brain and specifically the parietal lobe.
Occipital Bone
- Flat bone located at the back of the skull.
- Contains squamous, basilar, and lateral parts.
- Articulates with parietal, temporal, sphenoid bones, and the atlas (first cervical vertebra).
- Blood supply from the middle meningeal artery.
- Functions:
- Protects the occipital lobe of the brain.
- Provides skull structure.
- Serves as an attachment point for various muscles.
- Forms the foramen magnum, the passage for the spinal cord.
Temporal Bones
- Irregular bones located on the sides of the skull.
- Composed of squamous, petrous, tympanic, mastoid, and styloid parts.
- Articulate with parietal, occipital, and zygomatic bones.
- Blood supply from middle meningeal artery, posterior auricular artery, and stylomastoid artery.
- Functions:
- Contribute to skull structure and brain protection.
- Provide anchor points for muscles associated with the tongue and larynx via the styloid process.
- House the middle and internal parts of the ear.
