The Cranium
- The cranium is composed of 8 bones
- These bones include: Frontal, Parietal (2), Sphenoid, Ethmoid, Temporal (2), Occipital
Frontal Bone
- Type: Flat bone
- Parts: squamous, orbital, nasal
- Location: front of the cranium, articulates with parietal bones, ethmoid, lacrimal, maxillae, nasal, zygomatic, and sphenoid bones
- Blood supply: middle meningeal artery
- Function:
- Provides structure to the skull, eye orbits, and upper face
- Protects the frontal lobe of the brain
- Aids in facial expressions (muscle attachment point)
Parietal Bones
- Type: Flat bones
- Parts: frontal, occipital, sphenoidal, mastoid angles
- Location: articulate with frontal, occipital, temporal, and sphenoidal bones
- Blood supply: middle meningeal artery
- Function:
- Provides structure
- Protects the brain
Occipital Bone
- Type: Flat bone
- Parts: squamous, basilar, and lateral
- Location: articulates with parietal, temporal, sphenoid bone, and atlas
- Blood supply: middle meningeal artery
- Function:
- Provides structure to the skull
- Provides attachment for muscles
- Forms the foramen magnum
Temporal Bones
- Type: Irregular bones
- Parts: squamous, petrous, tympanic, mastoid, and styloid
- Location: articulates with parietal, occipital, and zygomatic bones
- Blood supply: middle meningeal artery, posterior auricular artery, and stylomastoid artery
- Function:
- Provides structure to the skull and protects the brain
- The styloid process is an anchor point for muscles associated with the tongue and larynx
- Contains the middle and internal part of the ear
