Robert Akins Bible
- The Robert Akins Bible was the first known English language Bible to be printed in America.
- It is also the only Bible to receive Congressional approval.
- The Bible is sometimes referred to as "The Bible of the Revolution" and is one of the rarest books in the world, with few copies still in existence today.
Petition to Congress
- On January 21st, 1781, Robert Akins presented a memorial petition to Congress, offering to print a "neat edition of the Holy Scriptures for use in the schools".
- The petition stated that Akins had begun and made considerable progress on the edition, but wanted Congressional sanction before proceeding.
Congressional Approval
- Congress appointed a committee to study the project and on September 12, 1782, they highly approved Akins' "pious and laudable undertaking".
- The endorsement by Congress was printed on the Akins Bible, approving its use in the school system.
