Pickleball Rules and Gameplay
- The most common type of play in pickleball is doubles play.
- A server has two serve attempts per turn, known as faults, before the serve is lost.
- The drop serve is a type of serve where the paddle is dropped and the ball is allowed to bounce before being hit.
- In doubles, each player on the serving team has two serves during the first service sequence of each new game.
- In singles, the server serves from the left side (odd) court when the score is odd.
- The server switches sides after scoring a point.
- The non-volley zone (NVZ) is the area on both sides of the net, extending 7 feet from the net to the sidelines, where players are not allowed to volley the ball.
Serving and Scoring
- The first server loses the serve when they or their partner faults twice.
- In doubles pickleball, a team loses the serve if they commit two faults.
- The serve is lost when the serving team fails to win a rally.
Non-Volley Zone and Double Bounce Rule
- The non-volley zone (NVZ), also known as the "kitchen," is the area on both sides of the net where players are not allowed to volley the ball.
- If a player steps into the non-volley zone while volleying a ball, it is a fault.
- The double bounce rule states that the ball must bounce twice before being volleyed, which prevents players from volleying the ball in the air.
Court Layout
- The centerline divides each side of the pickleball court into two service courts.
