The Philippines in ASEAN

  • In 1954, the Philippines joined the Southeast Asian Treaty Organization (SEATO) through The Manila Pact.
  • SEATO aimed to provide protection against the spread of communism in Southeast Asia.
  • SEATO member countries included: United States, Great Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines.
  • On August 5, 1963, President Diosdado Macapagal led the establishment of MAPHILINDO, a regional alliance between Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia.
  • The leaders involved were President Sukarno of Indonesia, President Macapagal of the Philippines, and Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman of Malaysia.
  • They signed an agreement to strengthen unity and cooperation between the three countries.
  • On August 8, 1967, five countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand—gathered at a beach resort in Bang Saen near Bangkok to draft the ASEAN Declaration.
