Study Notes
The Origin of Earth and Our Solar System
- Big Bang Theory: The universe formed approximately 14 billion years ago from a single point of infinite density and energy.
- Initial gas clouds were composed of Hydrogen (H). Fusion within these clouds created heavier elements, including Helium (He).
- Stars formed from the condensation of these gas clouds, fusing hydrogen into heavier elements up to Iron (Fe).
- Supernovas explosions of dying stars release heavier elements (greater than Fe), which are later incorporated into new stars and planets.
- The Nebular Hypothesis: Our solar system formed approximately 5.5-4.6 billion years ago from a rotating cloud of gas and dust.
- Gravity caused matter to concentrate at the core of the cloud, forming the Sun. Smaller masses condensed into protoplanets, which grew via accretion.
- Solar wind pushed lighter elements away from the inner planets, resulting in rocky bodies. Outer planets retained their original gaseous compositions.
Accretion and Differentiation of Earth
- Earth began as a mass of accreted material but is now split into core, mantle, and crust.
- Differentiation occurred due to heat release from the condensation of the initial material, leading to melting and separation based on density.
Origin of the Moon
- The moon likely did not form alongside Earth, as its density is significantly lower (3.3g/cc) compared to Earth’s density (5.5g/cc), indicating a lack of a metallic core.
- The Collision Model proposes that a Mars-sized body collided with Proto-Earth, ejecting molten rock into space that formed the moon. This model explains the lack of a metallic core in the moon.
