Study Notes

The Nature of Christ's Resurrection Body

  • Christ's body was glorified, immortal, and supernatural, able to pass through solid matter and appear/disappear at will
  • Continuity of identity: same person, recognizable, but radically changed
  • Physicality to the resurrection: body with marks of crucifixion and wound in the side
  • Not just an appearance, but a body with physicality (John 20:27)

Characteristics of the Resurrection Body

  • Impossible to die, age, or be injured
  • Insusceptible to illness and disease
  • Able to vanish and reappear at will (not indicative of the resurrected state for humans)

1 Corinthians 15: The Key Chapter on Resurrection

  • The body is sown in corruption, dishonor, and weakness, but raised in incorruption, glory, and power
  • Radical transformation and change, no longer subject to decay
  • Raised because of the power of God that raised Christ from the dead

The Order of Life and Existence

  • A natural body becomes a spiritual body ( soma pneumatikon)
  • From Adam (earthly) to the second Adam (heavenly), bearing the image of the heavenly
  • Will be like Him (Philippians 3)

Christ's Ascension and Exaltation

  • Removal from time and space, into the eternal state
  • Exaltation to the position of preeminence in the cosmos and heaven
  • Shares in the power and glory of the Son, sitting at His right hand as vice-regent

Manifested Presence and Ubiquity

  • Christ's body manifests His presence in heaven
  • Localized, manifested presence, not altering or restricting His attributes of Deity
  • The Lutherans' concept of ubiquity: the quality given to Christ's body by the Divine Nature
