The Mughal Dynasty was one of the most powerful empires in Indian history, ruling over large parts of the Indian subcontinent from the early 16th century to the mid-19th century. It began with the rise of Babur, who established the empire in 1526 after defeating the last Delhi Sultanate ruler. Over the following years, the Mughals expanded their rule, establishing their capital at Agra and building many architectural marvels such as the Taj Mahal.

One of the most important figures among the later Mughal emperors is Aurangzeb, born as Prince Muhammad Akbar in 1618. He ascended the throne in 1658 after his father Shah Jahan suffered a stroke, and he ruled until his death in 1707. Aurangzeb's reign was marked by significant military expansion, particularly into southern India where he defeated the Vijayanagara Empire. However, it also saw a decline in cultural patronage, which had been a hallmark of earlier Mughal rule.

Aurangzeb faced several challenges during his time on the throne, including rebellions within his own ranks. His brother Murad Baksh led an unsuccessful revolt against him in 1659, while another brother, Rauza, was executed for treason. Despite these issues, Aurangzeb managed to maintain control and extend the empire's borders, particularly through successful campaigns against the Marathas and Ahoms.

However, his military conquests were not without costs. To fund his wars, Aurangzeb imposed heavy taxes on his subjects, leading to widespread discontent and economic strain. This contributed to the gradual decline of the Mughal Empire, which began during his reign and continued under his successors.

Despite these challenges, Aurangzeb left behind a lasting legacy. He built the Bibi Ka Maqbara, often referred to as the 'poor man's Taj Mahal,' in honor of his first wife. Additionally, he oversaw the construction of several other grand structures, although none compare to the magnificence of the Taj Mahal, perhaps due to financial constraints.
