10 Questions

What are the three parts of the humerus?

The three parts of the humerus are the upper end, lower end, and shaft.

What are the five features of the upper end of the humerus?

The five features of the upper end of the humerus are the head, neck, greater tubercle, lesser tubercle, and intertubercular sulcus.

What are the seven features of the lower end of the humerus?

The seven features of the lower end of the humerus are the capitulum, trochlea, radial fossa, coronoid fossa, medial epicondyle, lateral epicondyle, and olecranon fossa.

Which side is the medial epicondyle located on?

The medial epicondyle is located on the medial side of the humerus.

What is the function of the head of the humerus?

The head of the humerus articulates with the glenoid cavity of the scapula to form the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint.

What is the function of the greater tubercle?

It serves as an attachment site for muscles that move the arm.

What is the function of the lesser tubercle?

It serves as an attachment site for muscles that move the arm.

What is the function of the intertubercular sulcus?

It serves as a passage for the tendon of the long head of the biceps muscle.

What is the function of the capitulum?

It articulates with the head of the radius to form the humeroradial joint.

What is the function of the trochlea?

It articulates with the trochlear notch of the ulna to form the humeroulnar joint.

Study Notes

Humerus Bone

  • The humerus is the bone of the arm, and it is the longest and strongest bone of the upper limb.
  • It is a long bone consisting of three parts: upper end, lower end, and shaft.

Upper End of Humerus

  • The upper end presents five features: head, neck, greater tubercle, lesser tubercle, and intertubercular sulcus.
  • The head is smooth and rounded, forming less than half of a sphere.
  • The head is directed medially backwards and upwards, and it articulates with the glenoid cavity of scapula to form the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint.

Lower End of Humerus

  • The lower end presents seven features: capitulum, trochlea, radial fossa, coronoid fossa, medial epicondyle, lateral epicondyle, and olecranon fossa.
  • The capitulum is a lateral rounded convex projection.
  • The trochlea is a medial pulley-shaped structure.
  • The radial fossa is a small fossa above the capitulum.
  • The coronoid fossa is a small fossa above the trochlea.
  • The medial epicondyle is a prominent projection on the medial side.
  • The lateral epicondyle is a prominent projection on the lateral side, but less than the medial epicondyle.
