The Gupta Empire
- Existed from around 320 CE to about 550 CE
- Founded by Sri Gupta, but it was his descendant Chandragupta I who became the first Emperor (Maharajadhiraja)
- Chandragupta I united much of India through military efforts, strategic alliances, and strong centralized political power
Samudragupta
- Son of Chandragupta I and considered a military genius
- Conquered Northern India, modern Nepal, modern Myanmar, and a portion of Southern India during his reign (335-375 CE)
- Followed the Arthashastra, a handbook on ruling a kingdom
Chandragupta II
- Son of Samudragupta, reigned from 380-415 CE
- Tolerant of other religious practices, allowing officials to freely practice their own religions
- Art, architecture, and cultural developments thrived during his reign
- The "Golden Age" of developments in India reached its peak during his reign
Medicine
- Advanced for the time, with writings in the Sushruta Samhita detailing medical advancements
- Recorded the usage of hundreds of medicinal plants and innovations in surgery
- Operations performed during the Gupta Dynasty used new tools and hygienic practices, including excising tumors and cesarean sections
Art, Architecture, and Culture
- Sculptures featured a variety of religious imagery, mainly from Buddhism and Hinduism
- Made of red or yellow sandstone, and sometimes terracotta
- Painting was also a popular form of art, but few mural paintings survived
- Temple structures featured pyramidal roofs (shikara) and rock-cut architecture
