The Digestive System
- The digestive system consists of the parts of the body that work together to turn food and liquids into the building blocks and fuel that the body needs.
- The digestive system begins with the mouth and ends at the anus.
- The main organs of the digestive system include the mouth, the oesophagus, the stomach, and the small and large intestines.
- The liver, the gall bladder, and the pancreas help in the process of digestion by producing substances that break food down into simpler forms.
- Intestinal juices help to digest the food.
- The small intestine absorbs water and vitamins.
- The large intestine releases waste.
The Respiratory System
- The respiratory system includes the nose, mouth, throat, windpipe, lungs, and rib cage.
- Air enters the respiratory system through the nose or mouth.
- The process of gas exchange called respiration takes place in the lungs.
- In respiration, oxygen from incoming air enters the blood and carbon dioxide, a waste gas from the body, leaves the blood and is breathed out.
- The diaphragm moves downward toward the abdomen and the rib muscles pull the ribs upward and outward to make the chest cavity bigger and pull air through the nose or mouth into the lungs.
The Circulatory System
- The circulatory system is made up of blood vessels that carry blood away from and towards the heart.
- The heart pumps the blood around the body.
- Arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins carry blood back to the heart.
- The purpose of the circulatory system is to carry oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and to remove waste products from them, like carbon dioxide.
The Nervous System
- The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
- The nervous system enables us to see, hear, smell, feel, and taste things around us.
- The nervous system helps us to fight infections.
Plant Adaptations
- Cactus plants have thick leaves with many thorns and deep roots to absorb water from the surface of the soil.
- Pine trees have needle-like leaves and seeds in cones to protect them from animals and weather conditions.
- Bougainvillea plants grow in sunny conditions and have colourful petals to attract bees for pollination.
