Study Notes
Anatomy of the Cerebellum
- The cerebellum has deep fissures: primary fissure, posterolateral fissure, and horizontal fissure.
- Anatomically divided into lobes: anterior lobe (anterior to the primary fissure), posterior lobe (between the fissures), and flocculonodular lobe (on the inferior surface).
- Comprises several components:
- Anterior lobe: includes lingula, central lobule, and culmen.
- Middle lobe: consists of declive, folium, tuber, pyramid, and uvula.
- Flocculonodular lobe: contains the nodule.
Subdivisions of the Cerebellum
- Archicerebellum: oldest part, includes flocculonodular lobe and lingula; maintains body equilibrium.
- Paleocerebellum: consists of anterior lobe (excluding lingula) and parts of the posterior lobe; manages muscle tone and finer movements.
- Neocerebellum: most recent development; comprises posterior lobe (excluding pyramids and uvula) and is responsible for voluntary movement coordination.
Grey Matter of the Cerebellum
- Contains the cerebellar cortex and intracerebellar nuclei.
- Cerebellar cortex has a thin grey matter layer over white matter, organized into three layers: molecular, Purkinje cell, and granular layer.
Structure of the Cerebellar Cortex
- Neurons include:
- Purkinje cells (in the Purkinje layer).
- Granule cells (in the granular layer).
- Stellate cells (in the molecular layer).
- Basket cells (in the molecular layer).
- Golgi cells (in the granular layer).
Position of Intracerebellar Nuclei
- Central core of each hemisphere is formed by white matter, with the superior and inferior medullary vela contributing to the roof of the fourth ventricle.
- White matter includes intrinsic and extrinsic types:
- Intrinsic fibers connect different cerebellar regions.
- Extrinsic fibers connect cerebellum to other CNS parts via three cerebellar peduncles: superior, middle, and inferior.
Connections Between the Cerebellum and Spinal Cord
- Direct pathways include ventral and dorsal spinocerebellar and cuneocerebellar tracts.
- Indirect pathways involve:
- Spino-olivocerebellar tract,
- Spinoreticulocerebellar tract,
- Spinovestibulocerebellar tract,
- Spinotectocerebellar tract.
Connections Between the Cerebellum and Cerebral Cortex
- Pathways that connect include corticocerebellar and cerebellocortical pathways, allowing communication between the cerebellum and other brain areas.
Cerebellar Peduncles
- Superior cerebellar peduncle: connects cerebellum to midbrain.
- Middle cerebellar peduncle: connects cerebellum to pons.
- Inferior cerebellar peduncle: connects cerebellum to medulla oblongata.
Function of the Cerebellum
- Essential for movement control and learning of motor skills.
- Maintains body equilibrium through vestibular and spinal connections.
- Constantly receives proprioceptive information about muscle contraction and joint position.
- Incorporates sensory input from eyes, ears, vestibular apparatus, reticular formation, and cerebral cortex.
