- The Cardiovascular System (CVS) is comprised of the heart, blood, and blood vessels.
- Blood vessels include: arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins.
Arteries

Artery structure: Arteries consist of three layers:
- Tunica intima (innermost layer): Contains an endothelial lining, glycoprotein basal lamina, sub-endothelial connective tissue, and an internal elastic lamina.
- Tunica media (middle): Contains smooth muscle, elastic tissue, and connective tissue.
- Tunica adventitia (outermost layer): Contains collagen fibers that prevent stretching.

Classification of arteries:
- Elastic Arteries: Rich in elastic fibers, allowing for expansion and recoil. Examples include the aorta and large arteries supplying the head and neck.

Capillaries
- Three types of capillaries:

Arteries vs. Veins

Heart

- Cardiac orientation: Shaped like a pyramid that has fallen over, resting on its side with four surfaces: diaphragmatic (inferior), anterior (sternocostal), right pulmonary, and left pulmonary.

- Coronary sulcus: Separates atria from ventricles.
- Anterior and Posterior interventricular sulci: Separate the two ventricles.
Heart Wall
- The heart wall has three layers:

Pericardium: Fibroserous sac surrounding the heart and great vessels.
- Fibrous Pericardium: Outermost layer; continuous with great vessel tunica adventitia and adherent to the diaphragm; prevents over-distention.
- Serous Pericardium: Innermost layer; consists of a parietal layer lining the fibrous pericardium and a visceral layer (epicardium) adherent to the heart muscle.
- Myocardium: Thickest layer of the heart, composed of cardiac muscle cells.
- Endocardium: Innermost layer; composed of simple squamous epithelium (endothelium) and subendocardium.

Heart Chambers

Coronary Circulation
