The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Enacted in 1990
- Prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities
- Applies to employment, schools, transportation, and public and private places open to the public
- Guarantees equal rights and opportunities for people with disabilities
- Protections are similar to those provided based on race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion
- Ensures equal opportunities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications
- Defines a person with a disability as someone with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, or a record or history of such an impairment, or is regarded/perceived by others as having such an impairment
- The term "disability" is used in a legal rather than medical context in reference to the ADA
- Nurse practitioners should be aware of this distinction
