Study Notes
Cranial Nerves and their Functions
- There are 12 cranial nerves that relay information between the brain and the rest of the body.
Olfactory Nerve (1st)
- Responsible for relaying smell information.
- A sensory nerve that controls the sense of smell.
Optic Nerve (2nd)
- Transmits visual information from the retina to the brain.
- A sensory nerve that controls vision.
Oculomotor Nerve (3rd)
- Controls most eye muscles, including those that move the eye, constrict the pupil, and elevate the upper eyelid.
- Works closely with the Trochlear Nerve (4th) and Abducens Nerve (6th).
Trochlear Nerve (4th)
- Controls the downward and outward movement of the eye.
- Works closely with the Oculomotor Nerve (3rd) and Abducens Nerve (6th).
- Weakness of downward gaze can cause difficulty descending stairs.
Trigeminal Nerve (5th)
- A motor and sensory nerve that carries sensory information from the head, neck, sinuses, and face.
- Supplies muscles used in chewing and sensation in the face.
Abducens Nerve (6th)
- Controls lateral eye movement.
- Works closely with the Oculomotor Nerve (3rd) and Trochlear Nerve (4th).
Facial Nerve (7th)
- A sensory and motor nerve that supplies the muscles of facial expression.
- Controls blinking, taste sensations from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue, and sensation in fingers and toes.
Auditory Nerve (8th)
- Controls hearing and balance.
- The vestibular nerve receives positional information, while the cochlear nerve transmits sound information to the brain.
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (9th)
- A sensory and motor nerve that controls some muscles used in swallowing.
- Controls taste from the posterior one-third of the tongue and sensation in the throat, nasal passages, and tongue.
Vagus Nerve (10th)
- A sensory and motor nerve that controls muscles of the pharynx and larynx.
- Processes sensory information from the external ear, pharynx, larynx, and viscera.
Accessory Nerve (11th)
- A motor nerve that controls muscles used in head and shoulder movement.
Hypoglossal Nerve (12th)
- A motor nerve that controls muscles of the tongue and neck.
- Can cause speech problems, ipsilateral (single-sided) movement of the tongue, and thick speech.
