  • Discourse refers to an utterance, talk, speech, or discussion, and is an extended expression of thoughts or ideas.
  • Text is a large unit of written language, where a group of ideas are put together to make a point or central idea.

Properties of a Well-Written Text

  • Organization refers to the arrangement of ideas in a text.
  • Coherence and cohesion refer to the connection of ideas and sentences between paragraphs.
  • Proper mechanics refer to various writing conventions.
  • Appropriate language use refers to the acceptable style of language for a particular form of text.

Morphology

  • Morphology is the study of words and how they are formed and their relationship to other words in the same language.
  • Morpheme: a free morpheme can function independently as a word, while a bound morpheme cannot function independently as a word.
  • Two varieties of morphemes: inflectional morphemes modify the grammatical class of words, and derivational morphemes modify either the part of speech or the actual meaning of the word.

Context Clues

  • Context clues are words, phrases, and sentences that surround an unfamiliar word and help the reader to understand or recognize the meaning of the word.
  • Most common types of context clues:
    • Synonyms (Restatement Clues): used when the text has words or phrases that are similar in meaning to the unknown word.
    • Antonyms (Contrast Clues): use of words that reveal the opposite meaning in relation to the unknown word.
    • Examples (Example Clues): specific details in a text that are used to clarify the meaning of a word.
    • Definition (Description Clues): the meaning provided as a clue which is usually introduced by verb forms, commas, or dashes.
  • Additional types of context clues:
    • Experience Clue: the reader knows from experience how people or things act in a given situation.
    • Inference Clue: sufficient clues might be available for the careful reader to make an educated guess at the meaning.
    • Cause and Effect Clue: the author explains the reason for or the result of the word.
