Flashcards

Studio size and equipment

Television studios come in various sizes and have different equipment setups, depending on the type of program they are used for. A small studio might have minimal equipment, while a large sound stage can accommodate elaborate productions.

The importance of the camera

Cameras are the heart of television production, capturing the images that viewers see. There are several types of cameras, each tailored to specific production needs.

Studio Camera

Studio cameras are designed for professional-grade productions like news programs, interviews, and panel shows. They offer high quality and flexibility for multi-camera setups.

EFP (Electronic Field Production) Camera

EFP cameras are portable and shoulder-mounted, allowing for flexibility in shooting on location. They are often used for documentaries and field recordings.

The role of microphones in television

Microphones capture sound for television programs. The type of microphone used depends on the desired sound pickup pattern and the nature of the audio source.

Bi-directional microphones

Bi-directional microphones capture sound from both the front and back of the microphone. They are useful when recording two people facing each other.

Uni-directional microphones

Uni-directional microphones capture sound primarily from the front of the microphone. They are ideal for isolating a single sound source, like an interview subject.

Omni-directional microphones

Omni-directional microphones pick up sound equally from all directions. They're often used as room microphones to capture the ambient sound of a scene.

Hand microphones

Hand microphones, held by a person, are commonly used for interviews and live performances.

Boom microphones

Boom microphones are suspended on a pole or arm, allowing for precise positioning to capture sound from a distance. They are often used for dialogue in film and television.

Key Light

Key light is the main source of illumination in a scene. It defines the shape and form of the subject, providing the strongest light.

Fill light

Fill light softens the shadows created by the Key light, providing more balanced illumination and reducing contrast.

Back light

Back light separates the subject from the background, providing depth and definition in the image. It is placed behind the subject.

Hard light

Hard light creates sharp, well-defined shadows. It is often associated with a bright, sunny day and adds a dramatic feel to a scene.

Soft light

Soft light produces softer, less defined shadows. It is often associated with cloudy days or overhead lighting and creates a gentler, more diffused effect.

Spot lights

Spot lights are used for directional lighting, focusing a narrow beam of light on a specific area. They are often seen in theatrical productions for dramatic effects.

Study Notes

Television Production Lecture 2

  • Television studios vary in size and equipment. Some are small with few pieces; others are large like sound stages. The specific equipment depends on the presented program's purpose.

  • No specific equipment is required for all studios. The equipment used varies by studio and presented program.

  • Studio Components:

    • A- The Studio: Camera, microphones, chroma key (green/blue background), décor, lighting.
    • B- The Control Room: Audio mixer, switcher, screen (live and pre-live).

Cameras

  • Television cameras remain crucial production equipment.

  • Camera types are categorized by their use (studio, electronic field production [EFP], electronic news gathering [ENG]).

    • Studio Cameras (EFP): Generally used for high-quality video, even smaller models, and multi-camera productions (news, interviews, panel shows).
    • EFP (Electronic Field Production) Cameras: Portable, shoulder-mounted cameras needing connection to external video recorders. Can be carried on tripods.
    • ENG (Electronic News Gathering) Cameras (Camcorders): High-quality, portable cameras with in-built recording devices.

Microphones

  • Microphones are classified based on pickup pattern and function.

    • Pickup Patterns: Bi-directional, uni-directional, omni-directional.
    • Functions/Usage: Hand-held microphones, boom microphones, headset microphones, wireless microphones (can be hidden).

Lighting

  • Lighting controls light and shadows and is crucial for how easily the camera and viewers understand elements.

  • Lighting helps the television camera see subjects clearly

  • It helps viewers see subjects and people clearly

  • It helps set the atmosphere (mood) of a scene.

    • Types of Lighting:

      • Key Light: Main light source to reveal the basic shape of the subject; usually placed 45 degrees from the camera and subject
      • Fill Light: Fills in shadows caused by the key light; approximately half the illumination intensity of the key light.
      • Back Light: Separates the subject from the background. To get good back lighting a space is needed between the background and the subject itself.
    • Lighting Capacity:

      • Hard Lighting: Creates distinct shadows. Examples are sunny days.
      • Soft Lighting: Creates barely visible shadows. Examples are cloudy days.
    • Studio Lighting Instruments:

      • Spot Lights: Produce directional light from focused beams
      • Flood Lights: Create broad, diffused light.

Other Studio Components

  • Chroma Keying: Blue or green background for electronic separation.
  • Décor: Still or portable décor used for set design.
  • Switcher: Switcher functions include:
    • Monitor video signals
    • Choose different video sources
    • Execute special effects
    • Execute transitions between sources (wipe, dissolve, fade to black, split screen).

Production Crew

  • Crew can be organized into categories:

    • Non-technical: Producer, executive producer, production manager, floor manager, director, associate director, writer, art director, graphic artist, makeup artist, sound designer
    • Technical: Chief engineer, maintenance engineer, camera operator , lighting director, video editor, audio technician.
