Study Notes

Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

  • TCM is an ancient and natural form of healing that recognizes the inseparable relationship between body, mind, and spirit, and nature
  • Based on the principles of harmony and dynamic balance, observed in nature

History of TCM

  • Date back to at least 2,200 years, with acupuncture and Chinese herbal remedies dating back to the Shang Dynasty (1000 BCE)
  • Earliest known written record of TCM is the Huang Di Nei Jing (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic) from the 3rd century BCE
  • Five Elements (Wu Xing) and the Book of Changes (Yi Jing) established firmly in the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE)

Principles of TCM

  • Holism: the body is integrated as a whole, with mind, emotions, spirit, and physical body interconnected and influencing each other
  • Pattern Differentiation: treating the patient, not the disease; each patient is unique and treated differently
  • Prevention: the best cure; the body has an innate self-healing capacity
  • Balance: the goal of TCM is to restore balance and harmony in the body

Yin and Yang

  • Yin: cold, heavy, obscured, receptive, and passive; associated with night, winter, and the moon
  • Yang: hot, light, radiant, creative, and active; associated with day, summer, and the sun
  • Opposition: Yin and Yang are relatively opposite, never exactly 50/50, and always changing to maintain homeostasis
  • Interdependence: Yin and Yang cannot exist without each other
  • Mutual Consumption: an excess of one will deplete the other
  • Inter-transformation: Yin and Yang transform into each other

5 Elements and Their Corresponding TCM Organs

  • Wood Element: Liver and Gall Bladder; emotions: anger and jealousy; sense: vision
  • Fire Element: Heart and Small Intestine; emotions: joy and anxiety; sense: speech and taste
  • Earth Element: Spleen and Stomach; emotions: pensiveness and worry; sense: taste
  • Metal Element: Lung and Large Intestine; emotions: sadness and grief; sense: smell
  • Water Element: Kidney and Urinary Bladder; emotions: fear and shock; sense: hearing

Tongue and Pulse Diagnosis

  • Tongue Diagnosis: observes the tongue's color, shape, coating, and moisture to reflect the body's condition
  • Pulse Diagnosis: feels the pulse's rate, strength, length, and quality to determine the body's balance

8 Principles of Pattern Differentiation

  • Exterior-Interior
  • Heat-Cold
