    Study Notes

    Nervous System Structure

    • The nervous tissue extending from the spinal cord into the brain is called the encephalon
    • Structures within that include the cerebellum, large central nuclei, medulla oblongata (medulla) and the pons
    • The parts of the brain that extend from the spinal cord are part of the central nervous system

    Meninges

    • The outermost layer of the brain's meninges is the dura mater
    • The middle layer is the arachnoid mater
    • The innermost layer is the pia mater
    • The outermost layer is the dura mater, the middle layer is the arachnoid, and the innermost layer is the pia mater

    Tactile Sense

    • Fine tactile sensation is conveyed through specific pathways
    • These pathways include the pyramidal tracts, extra-lemniscal tracts, spinocerebellar tracts, and lemniscal pathways

    Spinal Column Curvatures

    • An exaggerated anterior-posterior curvature is called scoliosis
    • An exaggerated posterior curvature is called lordosis
    • An exaggerated anterior curvature is called kyphosis

    Respiratory Rate

    • Typical respiratory rates for adults are in the 15-20/minute range, or the range 30-50/minute.
    • A typical respiratory rate ranges from 8-15 breaths per minute or 40-50.

    Abdominal Pain

    • Pain in the right lower quadrant, indicative of appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix)
    • Pain localized in the right lower quadrant, possibly due to conditions involving the liver, gallbladder or appendix.
    • Pain localized to the right lower quadrant can be caused by several issues - one example is acute appendicitis.

    Heart Valves

    • The valve located on the same side as the aortic valve is the mitral valve
    • The valve situated on the same side of the heart as the aortic valve is the mitral valve, which is the valve located on the same side of the heart as the aortic valve.

    Upper Limb Movements

    • Flexion brings a part of the limb closer to the trunk;
    • Extension moves a part of the limb away from the trunk
    • Abduction moves a limb away from the body
    • Adduction moves a limb toward the body

    Abdominal Organs

    • The appendix is a structure located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen
    • The location of the liver is within the abdominal cavity
    • Parts of the small intestine, such as the ileum, are housed in the abdominal cavity
    • The pancreas, part of the digestive system, lies in the abdominal cavity
    • The spleen is a major part of the human immune system, is found in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen

    Vertebral column

    • The cervical spine is made up of 7 vertebrae

    Respiratory System

    • The zone where gas exchange occurs and is the site of gas exchange
    • Conducting airways, such as the main and secondary bronchi
    • The bronchi are a part of the respiratory tract

    Digestive System

    • The circular muscle that regulates the emptying of the stomach into the duodenum is called the pyloric sphincter
