Study Notes

System Analysis and Design

  • System Analysis and Design involves five steps: systems planning, systems analysis, systems design, systems implementation, and systems support and security.

Types of Analysis

  • Structured Analysis: SDLC model includes five steps, with a focus on systems planning, analysis, design, implementation, and support and security.
  • Object-oriented Analysis: combines data and processes that act on the data into objects, which possess properties and can be manipulated through methods and messages.

Development Methods

  • Agile Methods: emphasize continuous feedback, iterative development, and the Agile Manifesto; examples include Scrum and Extreme Programming (XP).
  • Other Development Methods: Joint Application Development (JAD), Rapid Application Development (RAD), Rational Unified Process (RUP), V model, and DevOps model.

Components of an Information System

  • Software: programs that control the hardware and produce the desired information or results; consists of operating systems, application software, and utility programs.
  • Data: raw facts that an IS transforms into useful information, with no inherent meaning; cannot be used for making decisions.
  • Hardware: includes mobile devices, servers, and other equipment.
  • People: includes users, analysts, and developers.

Types of Information Systems

  • Enterprise Computing Systems: support company-wide operations and data management requirements; examples include Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
  • Transaction Processing Systems: involve large amounts of data, are mission-critical, and update records and generate reports; examples include bill systems, payroll systems, and stock control systems.
  • Business Support Systems: designed to take relatively raw data and convert it into a summarized and aggregated form for managers; examples include Management Information Systems (MIS) and Sales management systems.
  • Knowledge Management Systems: called expert systems, simulate human reasoning, and use fuzzy logic.
  • User Productivity Systems: enhance the productivity and efficiency of individual users, manage time efficiently, and facilitate collaboration.

This quiz covers the introduction to information systems, current trends in IS projects, and the structured analysis of the SDLC model, including five steps.
