Definition

• Syntax refers to the rules governing the arrangement of words to form sentences, phrases, and clauses.
• It deals with the structure of sentences and how words are combined to convey meaning.

• Phrasal category: a category that defines the type of phrase or sentence (e.g., noun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase)
• Constituent: a unit of syntax that forms a part of a larger sentence or phrase (e.g., a word, a phrase, a clause)
• Syntactic category: a category that defines the grammatical function of a word or phrase (e.g., noun, verb, adjective, adverb)

Types of Syntax

• Phrase structure: the arrangement of words within a phrase to form a grammatical unit
