    Study Notes

    Data Collection Methods

    • There are three basic ways of collecting data: Personal Interviews, Mailing (questionnaire) Surveys, and Telephone Interviews.

    Personal Interviews

    • Used when the researcher has access to all members of the population.
    • Conducts face-to-face interviews with respondents.
    • Allows for a survey to be conducted by asking questions about a particular product or candidate.

    Mailing Questionnaire

    • When data is collected by mail, the questionnaire is sent to each individual with a request to complete and return it by a given date.
    • Advantages: less expensive, allows access to people in remote areas, does not allow influencing of respondents, and permits respondents to take sufficient time to give thoughtful answers.

    Survey Questions

    • Questions should be precise and clear.
    • Examples of good questions: "Is the electricity supply in your locality regular?" and "What percentage of your income do you spend on clothing?"
    • Examples of poor questions: "Is increase in electricity charges justified?" and "Do you spend a lot of money on books in a month?"

    Survey Instrument

    • The most common type of instrument used in surveys is a questionnaire/interview schedule.
    • The questionnaire should not be too long, and the number of questions should be as minimum as possible.

    Types of Interviews

    • Mailed Interview: least expensive, cannot be used by illiterates, long response time, does not allow explanation of unambiguous questions, and reactions cannot be watched.
    • Telephone Interviews: relatively low cost, relatively less influence on respondents, relatively high response rate, and reactions cannot be watched.

    Census and Sample Surveys

    • A Census or Complete Enumeration is a survey that includes every element of the population.
    • Census is carried out every ten years in India.
    • Examples of census data: population of India was 121.09 crore in 2011, and 23.83 crore in 1901.
    • Average annual growth rate of population in India: 2.2% per year in 1971-81, 1.97% in 1991-2001, and 1.64% in 2001-2011.
