Raytec sponges, known as 4 by 4's, are large gauze squares folded into 4-inch pads, utilized in deep incisions and mounted on sponge forceps, commonly referred to as sponge sticks.
Laparotomy sponges, also called lap or tape, are employed in major surgical procedures, such as abdominal or thoracic cavity openings, major orthopedic surgeries, and surgeries involving large blood vessels.
Small dissectors, or Kitner/peanut pushers, are small round or oval sponges wrapped in gauze with an x-ray-detectable thread. They are used for blunt dissection to separate or dissect tissues.
Round string sponges, also referred to as tonsil sponges, feature a gauze cover and attached string for easy retrieval. Commonly used in throat surgeries, these sponges help control bleeding in the tonsillar fossae after tonsillectomy, with the string draped outside the patient's mouth.
Cotton rolls, often synonymous with tonsil sponges, have similar functions as round string sponges and are also utilized in throat surgeries to manage tonsillar bleeding.
Neuroosurgical patties, or cottonoids, are flat sponges consisting of compressed synthetic or cotton material, equipped with an x-ray detectable string. They come in various sizes for use in neurosurgical, ear, and vascular procedures.
