Study Notes

Flashcards for Differentiating Surgical Instruments

  • Flashcards for Differentiating Surgical Instruments is an easy, portable way to study surgical instruments.
  • The cards are intended as an adjunct to two textbooks, namely Differentiating Surgical Instruments (2nd edition, F.A. Davis, 2012) and Differentiating Surgical Equipment and Supplies (F.A. Davis, 2010).
  • This flashcard set contains 219 of the most common instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • The flashcards focus on those used in General (including staplers), Laparoscopic, OB-GYN, and Robotic surgery.
  • The set includes 30 additional cards covering some basic orthopedic instruments.
  • Included in the set is a gray piece of folded Tyvek® to represent a Mayo stand top, which allows for placement of instrument cards for various procedures.
  • The activity cards included in the set are intended to provide ideas for different ways to study, whether alone, in a group, or as a class.
  • Scoring ideas accompany some activities, but the activities can be played without keeping score.
  • The colored strip along the top border indicates instrument surgical specialty:
    • Magenta = general surgery/staplers.
    • Purple = laparoscopic surgery.
    • Teal = OB-GYN surgery.
    • Green = robotic surgery.
    • Tan = basic orthopedics.
  • Clear pictures of the instrument and tip are on the front for easier identification.
  • There is large print the back of the cards for easier reading.
  • An additional set of interactive flashcards are available at http://davisplus.fadavis.com, keyword: Rutherford.

Activities

  • Category Grouping: Deal all or part of the deck of flashcards with instrument pictures facing up.
  • Instrument categories are written on pieces of folded paper for a person to draw a name and pick out corresponding cards.
  • Timed Mayo Stand Setup Race: Each person has a set of flashcards and is given the same procedure to prepare for.
  • Participants are timed on how fast they pull all the correct cards
  • Which Is Incorrect?: Pull six cards, five of which have something in common.
  • The individual then has to identify which card doesn't fit in with the rest and explain why.
  • Matching can be played with five rows of six cards each, picture side up.
  • Players then choose two cards that are in the same category (e.g., cutting, clamping grasping).
  • Procedure Yes or No?: Write names of surgical procedures on separate pieces of paper and place in a container.
  • Each person is dealt 15 flashcards from a shuffled deck and must decide which cards are used in that procedure.
  • Category Yes or No?: Write names of instrument categories on separate pieces of paper, and place in a container.
  • Each person is dealt 15 cards from a shuffled deck and must decide which cards are included in that category.
  • Is It in This Set?: Study pick sheet for 2–3 minutes, then try to pull out the flashcards of the instruments listed.
  • Who Am I? is played by two or more people where one person draws a flashcard but does not show it to the others.
  • That person then gives one hint (alias, use, additional information, or category) at a time, allowing the other players to try and guess the instrument.
  • Three in a Row: Draw a 3 × 3 tic-tac-toe grid and each player gets nine flashcards to name correctly in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
