Flashcards
Cervical Pleura Location
Cervical Pleura Location
The cervical pleura is represented by a curved line roughly 2.5 cm above the clavicle.
Anterior Costomediastinal Pleura
Anterior Costomediastinal Pleura
From the sternoclavicular joint, extending down to the sternal angle and xiphisternal point.
Right vs Left Costomediastinal Pleura
Right vs Left Costomediastinal Pleura
The right side follows the same course as the left side except it continues vertically downward from the sternal angle to the xiphisternal joint. The left pleura arches down to the 6th costal cartilage.

Study Notes
Surface Marking of Pleura (Parietal)
- Cervical pleura: Represented by a curved line, approximately 2.5 cm above the clavicle.
- Anterior margin: Extends from the sternoclavicular joint to the sternal angle, vertically downwards to the xiphisternal point.
- Left side: Follows the same path upwards to the 4th costal cartilage level and then curves downwards to the 6th costal cartilage.
- Posterior margin: Located 2 cm lateral to the 12th thoracic vertebra, extending laterally to the 4th cervical vertebra.
- Inferior margin: Crosses the 8th rib in the midclavicular line or the 10th rib in the midaxillary line.
Surface Marking of Pleura (Visceral)
- Apex: 2.5 cm above the medial 2/3 clavicle.
- Anterior border: Right side corresponds closely with the costomediastinal line. This border is obtained by joining the sternoclavicular joint, sternal angle, medial plane, and just above the xiphisternal joint.
- Left side: Corresponds to the costomediastinal line up to the 4th costal cartilage.
- Inferior part: Represents the cardiac notch. This part passes laterally 3.5 cm from the sternal margin and curves down medially to reach the 6th costal cartilage.
- Lower border: Crosses the 6th rib in the midclavicular line and the 8th rib in the midaxillary line. The cardiac notch is dull on percussion.
