    Study Notes

    Surface Marking of Pleura (Parietal)

    • Cervical pleura: Represented by a curved line, approximately 2.5 cm above the clavicle.
    • Anterior margin: Extends from the sternoclavicular joint to the sternal angle, vertically downwards to the xiphisternal point.
    • Left side: Follows the same path upwards to the 4th costal cartilage level and then curves downwards to the 6th costal cartilage.
    • Posterior margin: Located 2 cm lateral to the 12th thoracic vertebra, extending laterally to the 4th cervical vertebra.
    • Inferior margin: Crosses the 8th rib in the midclavicular line or the 10th rib in the midaxillary line.

    Surface Marking of Pleura (Visceral)

    • Apex: 2.5 cm above the medial 2/3 clavicle.
    • Anterior border: Right side corresponds closely with the costomediastinal line. This border is obtained by joining the sternoclavicular joint, sternal angle, medial plane, and just above the xiphisternal joint.
    • Left side: Corresponds to the costomediastinal line up to the 4th costal cartilage.
    • Inferior part: Represents the cardiac notch. This part passes laterally 3.5 cm from the sternal margin and curves down medially to reach the 6th costal cartilage.
    • Lower border: Crosses the 6th rib in the midclavicular line and the 8th rib in the midaxillary line. The cardiac notch is dull on percussion.
