Submandibular Glands
- Paired salivary glands within the submandibular space
- Located between the digastric muscles, extending upwards deep to the mandible
- Comprised of a larger superficial and a smaller deep lobe, continuous around the posterior border of the mylohyoid muscle
- The deep part of the gland lies on the hyoglossus muscle, adjacent to the lingual nerve
- Drained by a single submandibular duct (Wharton's duct) emerging from its deep surface into the anterior floor of the mouth at the sublingual papilla.
Anatomical Relationships:
- Lingual nerve: Located in close proximity to the deep part of the gland
- Hypoglossal nerve: Also in close proximity to the gland
- Anterior facial vein: In relation to the gland
- Facial artery: Located near the gland
- Marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve: Associated with the gland
Submandibular Glands
- Paired salivary glands located in the submandibular space, situated between the digastric muscles and extending upwards under the mandible.
- Composed of a larger superficial lobe and a smaller deep lobe, joined around the posterior border of the mylohyoid muscle.
- The deep portion of the gland sits on the hyoglossus muscle, close to the lingual nerve.
- Drained by a single duct, the submandibular duct (Wharton's duct), which originates from the deep surface of the gland and enters the anterior floor of the mouth at the sublingual papilla.
- Important anatomical relationships include the lingual nerve, hypoglossal nerve, anterior facial vein, facial artery, and marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve.
