Study Notes
Structure of the Solar System
- Consists of 8 planets, 5 dwarf planets, and other smaller bodies
- Divided into two main categories: Inner Solar System and Outer Solar System
Inner Solar System
- Comprises 4 planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars
- Characterized by small, rocky planets with close proximity to the Sun
- Temperatures are high due to proximity to the Sun
Outer Solar System
- Comprises 4 planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
- Characterized by large, gas-giant planets with distant orbits from the Sun
- Temperatures are low due to distance from the Sun
Dwarf Planets
- 5 officially recognized dwarf planets: Pluto, Eris, Ceres, Haumea, and Makemake
- Located in the Kuiper Belt and asteroid belt
- Smaller and more irregularly shaped than planets
Other Bodies
- Asteroids: small, rocky objects found in the asteroid belt
- Comets: icy bodies that release gas and dust as they approach the Sun
- Kuiper Belt: region of icy bodies and other small celestial objects beyond Neptune
- Oort Cloud: distant, spherical shell of icy bodies surrounding the Solar System
