The Stone Age
- Lasted from 2.5 million years ago to around 3,000 B.C. in Europe and Asia, but ended at different times in various parts of the world
- Characterized by the use of stone tools instead of metal
Early Stone Age (Palaeolithic)
- Humans lived in caves, under large rocks, and in the open
- Inhabitants of eastern Africa built structures with stone and wood
- People gathered berries and plants, and hunted wild animals with primitive tools
- Some carved sculptures into rock or animal bones
- Climate was dominated by ice ages and warmer periods in between
New Stone Age (Neolithic)
- Began around 10,000 years ago
- Marked by the end of the last Ice Age and rising sea levels
- Humans adapted to these new climate changes
- People started to make tools from wood, shells, antlers, and other materials
- They learned to hunt, kill wild animals, and grow crops
- Later, they settled in small villages, made pottery, and wove cloth
