Flashcards
Stomach stretching
Stomach stretching
Stretching of the stomach wall triggers gastric secretions, ensuring continued secretion of juices while food is present.
Gastric Motility and Acid Secretion
Gastric Motility and Acid Secretion
The stomach's stretch receptors and pH receptors coordinate the rate of food movement and acid secretion
Intestinal phase inhibition
Intestinal phase inhibition
The presence of chyme in the duodenum slows stomach emptying, preventing a large influx of undigested material into the small intestine

Study Notes
Stomach Function
- Stomach walls stretch when food enters, triggering gastric secretions to continue until food is gone.
- Stretch receptors and pH sensors regulate motility and acid secretion.
- Peristalsis moves 10-15 ml of chyme into the duodenum.
- Negative feedback inhibits acid secretion when pH reaches specific levels and the stomach lessens in volume.
Hormonal Control
- Partially digested proteins (acting as buffers) or stomach distension cause parasympathetic fibers to release acetylcholine.
- Acetylcholine stimulates G cells to release gastrin, which increases gastric juice production, strengthens the esophageal sphincter, and relaxes the pyloric sphincter.
- Gastrin release stops when the pH drops below 2.0, or when the stomach has less volume.
Intestinal Phase
- Chyme entering the small intestine triggers reflexes to slow down gastric digestion.
- Preventing large chyme flows to the duodenum.
- Chyme's carbohydrates and fatty acids stimulate secretin and cholecystokinin (CCK) release.
- Secretin stops gastric secretion, and CCK inhibits stomach emptying.
